Dutch newspaper: MH17 was the intended target of the BUK
In an article in Dutch newspaper NRC published at September 16 author Karel Knip explains that MH17 was the intended target of the BUK. Knip states that Ukraine authorities must have known from day 1 the field South of Snizhne was the launchlocation. The Kyiv Research Institute for Forensic Expertise calculated a small area south of Snizhne as the alledged launch location as reported in the DSB final report.
Google Earth images show two parallel tracks of a vehicle with a width of 55 cm. The distance between the outside of the tracks is 3,80 meters. Which is equal to the width of a BUK vehicle.
To the southeast of the tracks there is a burned area. NRC points out that investigators of the Joint Investigation Team took soil samples at exactly the location near the isolated tree and the burned area. See this post for pictures of the alleged launch location including a video showing the collection of soil samples.
Based on the Google image the author believes the missile was exactly aimed at MH17.
The article is remarkable as the same author wrote at April 16 an article for NRC newspaper titled “BUK missile possibly had a different target”

The article is very amateurish. The more so the launch location is not there.

Later I found out that I was not the first.
Remarkable indeed since the article lists also the main problems: why the 31 degrees elevation upwards during impact? That would point to a course correction from an initial *lower* target. Then the author goes on to claim that the TELAR computer had calculated the original target would be way closer to explain the 33km limit overshoot.
All in all there are more reasons here to start thinking that the original target was NOT the MH-17 and that the jetliner was “on the wrong place on the wrong time”.
All in all remarkable to convert all these doubts into the opposite conclusion with such a definite tone. Way too early for that kind of certainty. It’s actually a bit of gutter journalism considering the strong sentiments attached to this event amongst his readers. But that’s what we’re seeing a lot these days. Directed premature anger being ready to directed to the easiest target. A bit like a BUK missile perhaps…
if I remember correctly, the buk can’t be re-targettet and a try results in self-destroying… am I wrong?
That’s also how I’ve understood it. It go to the painted target.
Rebels picked up a target and launched. Perhaps they thought it is fighter jet or a cargo plane. Perhaps they did not think, they just launched vs the target someone gave to them.
MH17 was the only aircraft in the air above ~2km, no room for accidental target change.
You are wrong. BUK’s missile has 2-3 seconds to find target after loss. If it can’t — it self-destroy.
Why guess when you can read about it?

Thanks! Although proper translation of relevant parts would be welcome. If I understood it right there are according to page 22 two passive radar homing modes: 1. by guiding TELAR reflection and 2. capturing generated “noise” directly. No sure about maximum range here though but it seems to confirmg my earlier statement, that 9M38M1 can find its own target without pre-defined “signature” signal decoding, even if TELAR would indeed have specific modulated radar signaling. It would simply not be the only targeting mode available.
It’s not clear to me under which conditions the self-destruct during autonomous flying can be triggered. Checking page 22 it talks about problems recapturing signal during its trajectory within a certain time. That’s not saying much about any maximum “shift” of a target re-appearing being allowed.
Any more illumination would be welcome here.

For that location I imagine BUK could hide in pushes and go to north side or south side depending on what area is being attacked by UA.
On the otherhand, BUK is there to stop the high altitude SU25/AN26 flights to the border area, BUK would be places ton the south side as estimated by the article.
If JIT confirm the location, it will hint that launch smoke pic is very “fishy”.
